Lummi Island Wild • Ethical Salmon & Seafood on Instagram: "Opening day is here! After weeks of preparation, the reefnet gear is back in the water. This is where the season begins. Reefnet fishing is the oldest, rarest, and most respectful way to fish: 📍 Fixed in place, right where fish naturally migrate 🐟 Zero bycatch, every fish is hand selected and released if not our target species ☀️ Powered by the sun and a whole lot of elbow grease This is how fishing should be. This is Wild Pink Salmon: Our Wild Lummi Island Pink Salmon is caught using an ancient selective technique called reef netting. This harvesting method requires great care, virtually unheard of in other commercial fisheries, which allows for the highest quality fish and almost zero by-catch. Our sourcing on Lummi is a collaboration between Provisions, Lummi Island Wild, and the Wild Fish Conservancy. Together, our goal is to assist and inspire other fishermen to adopt selective harvest techniques

In August 2019, I was honored to travel to Lummi Island to learn Reefnet Fishing, a stationary salmon fishing system invented by the Indigenous Salish peoples of the Puget Sound. Incredibly sustainable, it also produces the best tasting salmon you can buy. A huge thanks to @lummiislandwild for taking me under their wing (check out their store to buy amazing salmon!) and the Kinley family for invited me onboard their reefnet gear, the first Indigenous-run vessel in over 80 years! #fishing #indige

Our Wild Sockeye Salmon from place-based, family and community operated, set-net fisheries in Alaska, and our Wild Pink Salmon caught in reef-nets off Lummi Island, represent years of research in partnership with prominent fish conservation organizations. The result is delicious, truly responsible salmon we can all feel good about eating. | Patagonia Provisions

The Tiderun on Instagram: "Reef netting, or sxwo’le in the Lummi language, is an ancient Lummi Nation fishing method and an integral part of the tribe’s heritage that has been practiced for thousands of years. Modern adaptations of reefnet boats use solar power, zero bycatch, and humane handling for the most sustainably caught and highest quality salmon we have ever tasted. We have so much gratitude for our local fishermen and getting to cook these beautiful fish on the water’s edge just feet fr

No nets dragging. No guesswork. No bycatch. Our crew lifts each salmon alive from the water and sorts them one-by-one, harvesting only what belongs and releasing the rest back unharmed. This intentional method protects our ocean… and delivers salmon with unmatched flavor and texture. #truthtastetrust | Lummi Island Wild

Join us on a journey to Lummi Island as we dive into the history of reefnet fishing - the inspiration behind our Reefnetter Pacific Pale Ale. Reefnet fishing, once widespread throughout the Salish Sea, is now practiced in only a few spots, including off Lummi Island. As the oldest form of salmon net fishing, reefnetting is a sustainable fishing method that allows for the safe capture of Salmon, while causing no harm to the bycatch which is released back into the sea. Reefnet boats are powered by

Reefnet fishing is an innovative method developed by the Lummi Nation and other Northern Straits Salish tribes thousands of years ago. But punitive legislation, environmental damage, and devastation caused by the canning industry took ancestral fishing grounds away. Now, there are only 12 reefnetters left - and only one of them is a tribal member. Follow the story of the Salish Sea's last reefnetters on Origins: The Last Reefnetters, coming March 21 to Cascade PBS. https://bit.ly/4iiaJ4K | Casca

In "Scha'nexw Elhtal'nexw Salmon People: Preserving a Way of Life," two Lummi families contend with a dwindling fish population to maintain that deep spiritual connection.
